This article reminds of the quote by Bastiat, "if goods don’t cross borders, soldiers will." I don't know if it's the best argument, but in theory free trade should build more connections between countries and give them an incentive to avoid war with trading partners. I would say in practice, too, free trade seems to minimize conflict.
